The cover and the blurb of Bury the Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab are the best kept secrets. Reading the title and the blurb I assumed it would be a dark fantasy around a revolution. But I was surprised. In a good way. I won\’t spoil it here. Go read it!
I liked Maria\’s self-assuredness and sass but when later she was reduced to a mere showpiece and a baby maker by her husband and in-laws, that wrenched my heart, until she took matters into her own hands. However, later in the story she got on my nerves. She couldn\’t really handle her immortality and had gone bonkers out of boredom.
Alice\’s trope came too late in the story and ended too hastily.
Charlotte\’s naivete was not over-the-top, which I liked and she evolves quite well through the story.
Overall pacing of the story is good, makes you flip the pages. I like how the settings match with the story.
